Zen Sex: The Way of Making Love

How-to books on sex are like books on travel and cooking: the challenge is in translating the sensual dimension to words on a page. But Zen Sex: The Way of Making Love is more a guide to attitude than positions. Rather than trying to put you in the right mood, author Philip Toshio Sudo sets out to put you in the right mind for great sex.
The idea is simple: "The greatest challenge of Zen," he writes, "is to do what comes naturally in every moment; to express our true nature in every action." Sudo's way of Zen sex is to lose oneself in the experience of "ordinary" sex as a deeply absorbing--and potentially enlightening--meditation. "The more acutely we become attuned to this 'ordinary' energy, the more we begin to marvel at its dimension and wonder, the more we feel it and express it in our lives and lovemaking."

To tease readers into a more acute awareness of lovemaking, Zen Sex offers chapters on the poetic qualities of sexual expression. This is not the Kama Sutra, as Sudo says. Instead, he writes about discovery and anticipation, about scent and the cry of a lover, about the nature of entering and release. Purists, scholars, and others who prefer their Zen "dry-style" may resent his popularization and rangy interpretations. But for anyone intrigued by the merging of sexuality and spirituality, Zen Sex can bring inspiration and illumination into love play. It's a graceful little book the author designed himself, with images and calligraphy that create an open, intimate, and quietly erotic tone. One needs no familiarity with Zen to appreciate the book, but experienced Zen students may be surprised by new realms for classic teachings. --Rebecca Taylor --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

From Publishers Weekly
Journalist Sudo (author of Zen Guitar and Zen Computer) says that Zen and sex are two ways to attain "true wisdom." What could be better than marrying the two together? Zen sex, Sudo promises, "is the best sex you can possibly have." While Sudo warns that the book "is not a modern-day Kama Sutra" containing techniques and exercises, it offers broad principles to augment sexual pleasure. Familiarity, Sudo says, is essential: good sex requires knowing your own style and preferences and those of your partner. But to ensure that sex doesn't become routine, he suggests having sex to an offbeat piece of music or in the middle of the day. Another sine qua non to Zen sex is acceptance: lovers can diet, exercise and wear slenderizing black outfits, but they also need to accept their bodies. This sex guide is more zany than Zen-y, however; while it is sure to delight lovers, its grounding in Zen Buddhism is often superficial. Sudo acknowledges, for example, that most Zen monks are celibate, but argues that "pure" Zen allows nature to express itself in all possible ways, including sex. Sudo's slanted views on the Zen tradition to suit the (albeit loving) purposes of this book should give serious Zen enthusiasts pause, even while they appreciate the frank wisdomAand the lovely Japanese shunga imagesAthat grace these pages. (Aug.)
Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Zen philosophy tells us that the great truth of the universe applies to all things at all times. Every moment of life, from guitar playing to working at the computer, to making love, offers a chance for Zen realization. Just awaken to that truth, Zen masters say; how and where do not matter. Sex offers the same opportunity for enlightenment as anything else. Zen Sex guides readers to the realization of that opportunity with "The Ten Stages of Zen Sex" and "The Six Principles in the Way of Making Love." Philip Sudo reminds our sex-obsessed age that not only is sex a fundamentally spiritual endeavour, it is indeed sacred.

This elegant, gorgeous book will appeal not only to Zen practitioners, but to any one looking for enlightenment and spirituality in all aspects of life.

Great gift potential.

Good for the sex book audience, Zen practitioners and readers looking for meaningful sex.

While there are quite a few books that deal with spirituality and sex from the Tantric and Taoist tradition, no other book has brought together Zen and sex.

Easy-to-do practices help readers learn and experience Zen sex.

The latter half is more advanced in scope, applying structural determination methods to the study of a broad range of materials, including metallic, ceramic, covalent, amorphous, molecular solids and nanomaterials.

Throughout the text, mathematical theory and abstraction is complemented by a highly visual approach, allowing the reader to fully comprehend crystal structure.

With over 430 illustrations, 400 homework problems and crystal structure files, this is suitable for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on crystallography within materials science and engineering.

This book is simply what it says it is. It's note for note. I often sit down and read the book while listening to this work of art. The information found in this book is awesome...take from it the licks and chord harmonies and help shape your own playing. If you want to know how to play these songs, buy this book. Its simple.

this book is correct note by note. The fact that Petrucci edited it makes it even more amazing.

Summary: A musician's guide to songwriting
Rating: 5

Where I really learn from Dream Theater is when I read this score while the CD is playing. Because, after all, this book really is a very thorough score for the album, allowing you to watch at least two of the parts in action (guitar and voice), plus the occasional piano part written out. Since I play both piano and guitar, and sing, it's like having a partial orchestration provided for my education. And I do learn from this music. You will, too, and that can only help your own technical ability. Of course, you really need to know how to read music (and quickly, in some sections) to read the book while the CD is playing. As Petrucci says in another book, regular practice is the greatest boost to proficiency - so if you get this book, read thru it with the studio recording, and practice regularly, you will learn how to play this music. Maybe not as well, maybe not as spontaneously, but there are so many techniques here you'll gain a solid foundation for rock playing and writing. Not a bad return on your $25 investment, as long as you're willing to put in the time, too.

Not every page is going to surprise you, because there's a lot of repetition in DT's music and usually with enough subtle variation that few shortcuts can be taken and still remain faithful to the original songs. You'll see that here. You'll also see plenty of "Riffs" and "Rhythm Figures", too. Again, the trick is to see how they constructed their songs and appreciate both the repetition and the changes.

You will learn from this book, which is an excellent transcription of the guitar and voice parts, and I think you'll enjoy it every step of the way. 5 stars simply because this is such a great resource for any guitarist's education -- and it's such great music, too.

Dougal Dixon, Barry Cox, R.J.G. Savage, Brian Gardiner
“Macmillan Illustrated Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animals: A Visual Who's Who of Prehistoric Life"

MacMillan Publishing Company (November 1988) | ISBN:0025801910 | PDF | 312 pages | 34,7 Mb

These are happy hunting days for lovers of dinosaur paraphernalia. As such, the Macmillan encyclopedia has something for everyone: colored reconstructions of the animals matched with a text whose style is accessible to most enthusiasts but whose content is extensive enough for more serious students. Both newly discovered and classic fossil animals are included, and there is background information to put each animal in time, place, and taxonomic perspective. The book's strongest feature is its inclusion of vertebrate animals other than dinosaurs. The variety of fossil fish and mammals should convince the skeptical that dinosaurs had no monopoly on bizarre structure.

Master Handbook of Acoustics, 5th Edition (2009)

What makes a book a classic? More than anything, a classic book is one that we
know and trust, a well-used book with dog-eared covers and underlined
passages. Without question, Mr. Everest’s The Master Handbook of Acoustics
qualifies as a classic. It was extremely well received when the first edition appeared in
1981, and strong reader demand prompted the preparation of new editions, through the
fourth edition in 2001. In fact, the title was the best-selling book on acoustics for over
20 years. The acoustical engineering community grieved when Mr. Everest passed away
in 2005 at the age of 95. He was a giant in the field of acoustical engineering, and a great
example of the high caliber of engineers of his generation. He will be missed.
I was honored when McGraw-Hill asked me to prepare a fifth edition. I had used
the Handbook for 25 years, and was well familiar with its value as a teaching text and
reference book. Fully cognizant of the challenges of tackling such a project, I agreed
to lend a hand. Some readers who are familiar with my book, Principles of Digital
Audio, may be surprised to learn that my passion for digital technology is equaled by
my enthusiasm for acoustics. I taught courses in architectural acoustics (in addition
to classes in digital audio) for 30 years at the University of Miami, where I directed
the Music Engineering Technology program. Throughout that time, I also consulted
on many acoustics projects, ranging from recording studio to listening room design,
from church acoustics to community noise intrusion. As with many practitioners in
the field, it was important for me to understand the fundamentals of acoustical
properties, and also to stay current with the practical applications and solutions to
today’s acoustical problems. This essential balance was the guiding principle of
Mr. Everest’s previous editions of this book, and I have continued to seek that same
equilibrium.

Minds and gods the cognitive foundations of religion

Quote:
Published by: Oxford University Press, USA
Around the world and throughout history, in cultures as diverse as ancient Mesopotamia and modern America, human beings have been compelled by belief in gods and developed complex religions around them. But why? What makes belief in supernatural beings so widespread? And why are the gods of so many different people so similar in nature? This provocative book explains the origins and persistence of religious ideas by looking through the lens of science at the common structures and functions of human thought.
The first general introduction to the "cognitive science of religion," Minds and Gods presents the major themes, theories, and thinkers involved in this revolutionary new approach to human religiosity. Arguing that we cannot understand what we think until we first understand how we think, the book sets out to study the evolutionary forces that modeled the modern human mind and continue to shape our ideas and actions today. Todd Tremlin details many of the adapted features of the brain -- illustrating their operation with examples of everyday human behavior -- and shows how mental endowments inherited from our ancestral past lead many people to naturally entertain religious ideas. In short, belief in gods and the social formation of religion have their genesis in biology, in powerful cognitive processes that all humans share.
In the course of illuminating the nature of religion, this book also sheds light on human nature: why we think we do the things we do and how the reasons for these things are so often hidden from view. This discussion ranges broadly across recent scientific findings in areas such as paleoanthropology, primate studies, evolutionary psychology, early brain development, and cultural transmission. While these subjects are complex, the story is told here in a conversational style that is engaging, jargon free, and accessible to all readers. With Minds and Gods, Tremlin offers a roadmap to a fascinating and growing field of study, one that is sure to generate interest and debate and provide readers with a better understanding of themselves and their beliefs.

The New Psychology of Body Language
by Geoffrey Beattie

In this book I am going to present a new theory of bodily communication, or at least
of an important part of bodily communication, namely the movements of the hands
and arms that people make when speaking. I will argue that such movements are
not part of some system of communication completely divorced from speech, as
many psychologists have assumed, rather they are intimately connected with
speaking and with thinking. Indeed these movements of the hands and arms reflect
our thinking, like language itself but in a completely different manner. I will argue
that such behaviours provide us with a glimpse of our hidden unarticulated thoughts.
Movements of the hands and arms act as a window on the human mind; they make
thought visible.
This is a new theory in psychology, which owes much to the pioneering work of the
American psychologist David McNeill, but as the Big Brother psychologist I have
taken this theory and applied it to examples of behaviour from the Big Brother house
for millions to see. Many seemed to like the basic idea and agreed that my
interpretations of unarticulated thoughts were at least plausible, but what was the
scientific value of this new theory? Where did the theory come from? How had it
been tested? Were there other possible explanations for the unconscious movements
of the hands and arms as people speak? In a television show you are not afforded
opportunities to go into these kinds of issues. In this book I will outline the scientific
case for this new theory and explain why movements of the hands and arms are a
crucial and integral part of thinking and why careful scrutiny of these movements
might reveal a great deal about the thinking of the individuals concerned and
sometimes much more than they ever intended.

The Cycle of Leadership: How Great Leaders Teach Their Companies to Win

Noel M. Tichy, “The Cycle of Leadership: How Great Leaders Teach Their Companies to Win”
Collins Business | 2004 | ISBN: 0066620570 | 464 pages | PDF | 10,7 MB

In The Leadership Engine, Noel Tichy showed how great companies strive to create leaders at all levels of the organization, and how those leaders actively develop future generations of leaders. In this new book, he takes the theme further, showing how great companies and their leaders develop their business knowledge into “teachable points of view,” spend a great portion of their time giving their learnings to others, sharing best practices, and how they in turn learn and receive business ideas/knowledge from the employees they are teaching.

Calling this exchange a virtuous teaching cycle, Professor Tichy shows how business builders from Jack Welch at GE to Joe Liemandt at Trilogy create organizations that foster this knowledge exchange and how their efforts result in smarter, more agile companies, and winning results. Some of these ideas were showcased in Tichy’s recent Harvard Business Review article entitled, “No Ordinary Boot Camp.”

Using examples from GE, Ford, Dell, Southwest Airlines and many others, Tichy presents and analyzes these principles in action and shows how managers can begin to transform their own businesses into teaching organizations and, consequently, better-performing companies.

Beginning AutoCAD 2006
Newnes; 1 edition | ISBN:0750669578 | 376 pages | March 14, 2006 | PDF | 12 Mb

Beginning AutoCAD 2006 is a course based on learning and practising the essentials of 2D drawing using AutoCAD. Bob McFarlanes hands-on approach is uniquely suited to independent learning and use on courses. The focus on 2D drawing in one book ensures the reader gets a thorough grounding in the subject, with a greater depth of coverage than tends to be available from general introductions to AutoCAD. As a result, this book provides a true, step-by-step, detailed exploration of the AutoCAD functions required at each stage of producing a 2D drawing an approach often not found in the many software reference guides available.

The emphasis on learning through doing makes this book ideal for anyone involved in engineering, construction or architecture where the focus is on productivity and practical skills. The author has also matched the coverage to the requirements of City and Guilds, Edexcel (BTEC) and SQA syllabuses.

New features in AutoCAD 2006 are covered in this book including: DYN (dynamic input showing coordinate position and lengths an important new feature of the latest AutoCAD software), as well as new commands in the Modify and Dimension tool set. The result is a useful refresher course for anyone using AutoCAD at this level, and those upgrading to the new software release. The course is also designed to be fully relevant to anyone using other recent releases, including AutoCAD 2005.

* A complete course on 2D design with AutoCAD in one book - ideal for independent learning
* Exercises aid student learning and self assessment
* Focus on 2D drawing provides in-depth coverage to this key introductory-level use of AutoCAD
